Under Cover for Wells Fargo

The Unvarnished Recollections of Fred Dodge

by Fred Dodge (edited by Carolyn Lake)

Boston, MA: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1969.

280 pages. Stated: First Printing. I would have graded the book "very good" except that it is an Ex-Library, with the pocket still attached and a few small stamps from the library. These are the remarkable memoirs of Fred Dodge (1854-1938), Wells Fargo secret agent for fifty years, friend of Wyatt Earp, and fast man with a gun. Here are dozens of his cases--stage robberies, train holdups, long pursuits through the badlands, even suits against Wells Fargo for "delay to a corpse" and the bite of a vicious horse. In Under Cover for Wells Fargo his "unvarnished recollections" are preserved and carefully edited by Carolyn Lake, who discovered Dodge’s journals among Stuart N. Lake’s papers, awaiting a biography that was never written. Fred Dodge was a dead ringer for Morgan Earp, and this led to his early acquaintance with the famous brothers. In those days Dodge was posing as a gambler, and even Wyatt did not know that he was a Wells Fargo agent. Dodge sheds much light on the Earps in Tombstone and on how he teamed up with Heck Thomas to hunt down outlaws in Kansas and Oklahoma, including Bill Doolin’s gang and the Dalton brothers. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7Ÿ" - 9Ÿ" tall. Ex-Library.

The Earp Brothers of Tombstone: The Story of Mrs. Virgil Earp

by Frank Waters

New York, NY: Bramhall House, 1960.

247 pages. Tan hard cover, black lettering on spine. Dust jacket has some edge wear and rubbing. No price indicated on dust jacket. Wyatt, Morgan, and Virgil Earp, the "Fighting Earps of Tombstone", are well known to American history and legend. This book began as the dictated recollections of Mrs. Virgil Earp to the author in the 1930's. It was kept from the public until after both Mrs. Virgil Earp and the third Mrs. Wyatt Earp had died. Then in 1959, the author unearthed new documentary evidence by which he was able to verify and amplify her story. The final book is the first accurate account to be published of one of the most famous stories that ever cam out of the American West. This book reveals the story of Wyatt Earp's tragic love affairs and his three marriages. It shows vividly how the TV hero was in reality an intinerant saloon keeper, cardsharp, gunman, and confidence man who succeeded in making people believe he was a church deacon and a deputy marshal. It tells the true stories of the other brothers: James, a saloon keeper and a professional gambler; Warren, a boy in his twenties when he was in Tombstone, who was later a stage driver and was killed in a saloon quarrel; Morgan, a laborer, gambler and gunman who was killed in Tombstone by a shot in the back; Virgil, a stage driver, ranch hand, prospector and marshal who was shot and maimed in Tombstone.

Here are the stories of Doc Halliday, Bat Masterson, John Behan, and the Clantons, all as they happened. Here is a complete reconstruction of the famous fight at the O.K. Corral and the reason for it. More than a startling revelation, this is also a warm and human account of frontier life in a violent era, written with painstaking accuracy by an author who is known for his many fine books on the history of the West. [excerpt from dust jacket]. Hard Cover. Very Good/Good. 8vo - over 7Ÿ" - 9Ÿ" tall.

Alexander Hamilton: A Concise Biography

by Broadus MItchell

New York, NY: Oxford University Press, 1976.

395 pages. Brown cloth hard cover, black lettering on spine. Cream dust jacket, blue lettering, shelf wear to edges of jacket. Front free end piece has been removed. Price is intact on front bottom of dust jacket. Born an illegitimate child in the West Indies and killed in a duel with Aaron Burr, Alexander Hamilton was a fascinating individual as well as one of the chief architects of America. This book traces his exploits in the Revolution, first as a captain of artillery, then as Washington's confidential aide-de-camp, and finally as the commander of troops at the Battle of Yorktown. He was of great influence as a delegate of the Constitutional Convention, principal author of the Federalist Papers, advocating the adoption of the Constitution. Hamilton was the first Secretary of the Treasury under Washington. His ideological rivalry with Thomas Jefferson led to the formation of the American party system. Ironically, while the Democratic Party honors Jefferson as it exemptor, in reality it has adopted Hamilton's concept of the welfare state. [excerpt from dust jacket]. Hard Cover.

by Andrew Oliver

Charlottesville, VA: University Press of Virginia, 1977.

209 pages. Dark blue cloth hard cover, gold lettering on spine. Cream dust jacket, black lettering, blue sillouette. Very light foxing speckles to the top edges of text and dust jacket. John Marshall was the fourth Chief Justices of the Supreme Court and was the longest serving Justice. This book features illustrations of most of the Marshall portraits--over a hundred in all--and also includes four portraits of Mary Willis Marshall. Biographical sketches of all the artists mentioned are included, so that in a broad sense this book is an important contribution to the history of portraiture in America from 1800 to 1835 as well as the definitive icongraphic study of Marshall [excerpt from dust jacket].
